Deadline January.
All full-time and part-time law students currently seeking a juris doctor (JD) or a master of laws (LLM) at an accredited law school are eligible to enter the competition. Students may submit any original paper concerning federal taxation. Papers must be (i) a minimum of twenty pages and a maximum of fifty pages, including footnotes and (ii) double spaced, with one-inch margins and 12 -point Times New Roman font (though footnotes may be single spaced and in 10-point font). Two winning papers will be selected by the leadership of the Federal Bar Association Section on Taxation.
The authors of the first place and second place papers will receive:
(i) A cash prize ($2,000 for first place and $1,000 for second place);
(ii) A trip to the FBA’s Annual Tax Law Conference which will be held in Washington, DC, March (value not to exceed $700), where each winner will be presented with a commemorative plaque.

Deadline July 11, 2025. Named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald, Jr. the Tannenwald Writing Competition is open to all full- or part-time law school students, undergraduate or graduate. Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted. Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic. Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 are typically awarded for the top three papers.

Deadline June 1, 2025. This competition is open to any law student in good standing (full-time or part-time) who is currently enrolled at the time of submission or was a student within the past 90-day period prior to submission as a J.D. or LL.M. candidate in an ABA-accredited law school within the United States or its possessions. The paper must relate to the area of trusts and estates, broadly defined.

Deadline May 31, 2025. The goal of the Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law student writing contest is to encourage and reward law student writing on the subjects of real property or trust and estate law. This contest is open to all J.D. and LL.M students currently attending an ABA-accredited law school.
1st place: $2,500 award, full-tuition scholarship to the University of Miami School of Law's Heckerling Graduate Program in Estate Planning OR Robert Traurig-Greenberg Traurig Graduate Program in Real Property Development for the 2025–2026 or 2026-2027 academic year*, free round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations to a RPTE Section meeting. one-year free RPTE membership, consideration for publication in The Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Journal, the Section's law review journal, which is mailed to 17,000 RPTE members, name and essay title will be published in the eReport, the Section's electronic newsletter
2nd place: $1,500 award
3rd place: $1,000 award
