Students -- Borrowing

Legal Information Center Student Borrowing 2021

Users must check out materials at the Circulation Desk. Users should present their Gator 1 card when checking out materials. Students may check out up to 250 items at one time.

Circulating books may be checked out for eight weeks. Books may be renewed online or at the Circulation Desk unless another patron has requested the item.

Books must be returned to the book return located east of the entrance to the LIC. Books may not be returned to circulation at this time.

Books shelved in Reserve are unavailable. Many of these materials are available digitally or a digital copy has been provided to your professor. If you have questions about access to a book on reserves, please contact us.

Other Circulating Items 2021

For the safety of our patrons and staff, the LIC will not circulate technology including Mac and PC laptop chargers, Android and iPhone chargers, external USB DVD/CD drives, or noise-canceling headphones at this time.

If you wish to use the whiteboards available in the LIC, please bring your own dry erase markers during Spring 2021.

Smathers Library Borrowing

Students can borrow materials from any of the libraries on campus. Materials must be obtained from the library where the material is held, however, materials can be returned to the Legal Information Center.

Borrowing from Other Florida Libraries

UBorrow is a program that allows you to quickly and easily place requests for materials held by other Florida university libraries. Due to cost savings and speed of delivery, UBorrow is preferable to interlibrary loan if the material is available. If you have searched the University of Florida Libraries catalog and determined that the item you seek is not held by any of the UF libraries, click the "Search Other FL Academic Libraries" in the box on the left hand side of the screen. You will be taken to the Florida Academic Library Services Cooperative (FALSC) search. Alternatively, you can search the FALSC shared catalog at If the item is available, a navy blue UBorrow button will appear. Click that button to start the process. For pickup location, select "Legal Information Center." Click the "Place Request" button. Your request will be automatically processed and you will receive an email when the materials are ready to be picked up at the Legal Information Center Circulation Desk.

If the item you are interested in is not available through UBorrow, we may be able to obtain it through interlibrary loan. (ILL) Please view the information on the ILL process below.

Beginning on May 1, 2021, UBorrow requests and renewals will be temporarily suspended due to the statewide integrated library system migration.

All UBorrow materials will be due by June 30, 2021. Please return your UBorrow materials accordingly.

We will continue to fulfill requests through Interlibrary Loan, using ILLiad. Please submit your request(s) via your Interlibrary Loan account. Please contact us with any questions.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If materials are not available through Smathers Libraries, you may place a request for the Legal Information Center to attempt to borrow the material from another library in the United States through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). You can also request articles, chapters, or pages from books through ILL.

To place an Interlibrary Loan request, please submit an Interlibrary Loan request at

Note that books may take anywhere from one to two weeks to arrive through ILL. Requests for scans from books or articles usually arrive electronically within one week.
