2023 Summer and Graduate Access to Legal Research Databases

A guide to access for Bloomberg, Lexis+, and Westlaw during the summer and after graduation.

Lexis+

Students will automatically have free unlimited use of their law school Lexis+ ID this summer. This includes workplace-related research though students should check with their employer. Firms may prefer summer associates use a firm-issued Lexis ID. No registration is required for summer access, and students sign in as usual.

Students can get ready with on-demand Prepare to Practice resources that include tips and Practice-Ready Certification. The program includes three modules and an exam to test their knowledge related to researching unfamiliar topics, litigation and transactional drafting, and legal analytics.

Westlaw Edge

Students can use Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a specific client at a law firm. Examples of permissible uses for your academic password include the following but are not limited to:

  • Summer coursework or any type of academic research
  • Research assistant assignments
  • Law Review or Journal research
  • Moot Court or any trial competition research
  • Non-Profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Externship/Internship sponsored by the school

Students do not have to do anything to gain access to these tools over the summer. If you have any questions, please contact UF Law’s Thomson Reuters Westlaw Academic Account Manager Sue Moore at sue.moore@tr.com.

Bloomberg

Law students will automatically have free unlimited use of their law school Bloomberg account this summer. No registration required, just sign in as usual and start researching.
