Federal Legislative History: Home

Overview

A legislative history is a collection of the documents that are generated when a bill works its way through the legislative process.

One of the primary reasons a legislative history is compiled is to determine legislative intent; in other words, why Congress passed this particular piece of legislation.

The following are some of the pieces of a legislative history:

  1. Versions of the bill
  2. Committee Hearings
  3. Committee Reports
  4. Congressional Documents
  5. Committee Prints
  6. Congressional Debates
