Legal research can be effective and low cost (or free). There are options available beyond Westlaw, Lexis, and Bloomberg Law. This guide helps identify several alternatives

General Information - Online Guides to Sources

Use these databases to find legal information - links to primary (cases, statutes, regulations) and secondary materials.

Legal Information Institute (LII)

  • This is a research group housed at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.  They make available primary law, including links to the U.S. Code, the Code of Federal Regulations, case law and executive materials from agencies.  LII also provides a Legal Dictionary and Encyclopedia, called Wex, that has been built by the LII community.  This is one of the few free secondary sources available for free online.

Findlaw

  • Findlaw provides free legal information for consumers.  Contents include subject based information, a find a lawyer service, a question and answer forum, legal news/blog, and legal forms (these are not free - from U.S. Legal Forms, Inc.).

Lawyers.com

  • Similar to Findlaw, Lawyers.com provides free legal information by topic, legal news/blog, a find a lawyer feature, and a link to legal forms (these are not free - from LegalZoom).

LLRX

  • LLRX is a commercial website with free information on legal topics as well as links to court rules and docket information.

Lawyer Express

  • Customizable for users, this website provides links to legal information as well as news feeds and financial information.

Legal Information Center Databases

The Legal Information Center also has databases available for use for free to visitors.  Visitors need a guest account to use computers located at the Legal Information Center.
